One solution: Two technologies

The world’s leading premium drinks business hasn’t become the industry’s number one player by chance. Diageo places great importance on recruiting great people and developing them to reach their full capability. At the core of that development process sits the Diageo Academy.

The Academy is a one-stop-shop for learning and knowledge sharing at Diageo offering an online selection of 400 classroom events, almost 100 e-Learning courses and 200 virtual classroom sessions. There are also 450 downloadable resources for informal learning and knowledge sharing.

Diageo operates in over 180 markets and has 22,000 employees in 80 countries. The Academy has to be accessible by all the company’s employees and has to be seen to be easy to access and easy to use.

“Essentially the site uses two technologies,” explained ArtHaus’ Mark Bowerman. The ‘engine’ is a TopClass Learning Management System (LMS) developed by WBT Systems, while we built the user interface using SharePoint. We worked closely with WBT throughout the process, bringing our expertise both of SharePoint software and of Diageo’s unique branding and style of communication.

“One of the lessons we’ve learned in developing successful solutions – especially where they’re melding two technologies – is to get in on the project as early as possible. In this case we were able to work with the Academy team right from the start, designing the user experience from wireframe through structure to the finished project bringing in all our experience of designing within the existing family of SharePoint sites.

“The key has been to ensure the Academy is extremely user-friendly with intuitive screens, customizable views and a very robust search capability, so that information and courses can be found easily and quickly. We now have an ongoing maintenance contract for the site and are supporting the Academy Team as they translate the site into five languages to reflect the global nature of the business.”
